Omar (2013) was Palestine’s entry for Best Foreign Language Film at this year’s Oscars and finished as one of the five finalists.

“All the heads of the departments were Palestinians. Not all of them had experience but we all worked so hard to make a quality movie, and I think we proved we can do a high quality movie without the money or talent of the West. If I’m proud of anything it’s that this film was made by Palestinians with Palestinian money. I’m really proud of that. The non-Palestinians had no influence on the artistic quality or the quality of the movie.” — Hany Abu-Assad, Director

“We have to take ownership of our own talent,” added Waleed Zuaiter, one of the leading actors.

The film was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Jury Prize, and was shown at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival.

We’re showing this as a part of our film festival here :>

"Shemale" is a term used to erase and invalidate a trans woman’s identity as a female or fetishize us. It’s not funny. Words like "tranny" and "shemale" are not funny or cute. They’re cruel and derisive. You’re no trans ally if you use them. "Trap" is a word created to imply that trans women are deceiving men for sex. It propagates the fear that gets us murdered. Trans people asking folks to stop using "tranny" isn’t censorship/word-policing. We’re just asking to not be verbally bashed. By @MariTheTNF (via gwydionmisha)

Remember that when Marissa Alexander fired her warning shot to save her own life, she caused no injuries. Now she’s facing the very real possibility of spending the rest of her life in prison for that act of self-defense,” said advocate Sumayya Fire in the statement. “That should send a chill down the back of every person in this country who believes that women who are attacked have the right to defend themselves.
